February 26 2010 7:00pm

The Garden

Director: Scott Hamilton Kennedy
Year: 2008
Language: English
Time: 80 minutes

This film documents the 14-acre community garden in South Central Los Angeles that arose from the devastation of the 1992 riots. The garden grew and prospered, providing fresh, wholesome food and building community. Then it faced the threat of destruction from industrial development.

The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film Not rated

This is a special presentation as part of Shepherd University’s Common Reading Program’s One Book, One Community Program. This year the university’s common reading is Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. Post-film discussion led by Elizabeth Wheeler

March 12 2010 7:00pm

Abre los ojos
Director: Alejandro Amenábar
Year: 1997
Language: Spanish with English Subtitles
Time: 117 minutes

This film continues the spring theme of mind and memory with the story of an imprisoned man telling his story, as a flashback, to a psychiatrist. The man, César (played by Eduardo Noriega) was a known womanizer. His best friend was not very successful with women, but brings a beautiful woman (played by Penélope Cruz) to one of César’s parties. Big trouble, of course, ensues. Rated: R.

Post-film discussion led by Dr. Denis Berenschot, Associate Professor of Spanish at Shepherd University

April 30 2010 7:00pm

Regarding Henry

Director: Mike Nichols
Year: 1991
Language: English
Time: 108 minutes

This film concludes our spring mind and memory theme. Harrison Ford plays a lawyer who survives a shooting but loses his speech, mobility and memory. His struggle to regain his self in mind and body with the help of wife (Annette Bening) and family produces some surprising results.

While Harrison Ford had been a major film star for almost 15 years, this film was only Annette Bening’s third starring role and won her Newcomer of the Year award from the London Critics Circle. Rated PG-13.

Post-film discussion led by Elliot Kirschbaum

The Last Station

Set in the last tumultuous years of famed Russian author Leo Tolstoy’s life, centers on the battle for his soul waged by his wife Sofya Andreyevna and his leading disciple Vladimir Cherkov. Torn between his professed doctrine of poverty and chastity and the reality of his enormous wealth, his thirteen children and a life of hedonism, Tolstoy makes a dramatic flight from his home. Too ill to continue beyond the tiny rail station at Astapovo, he believes that he is dying alone, while over one hundred newspapermen camp outside awaiting hourly reports on his condition.

A Single Man

In Los Angeles 1962, at the height of the Cuban missile crisis George Falconer, a 52 year old British college professor is struggling to find meaning to his life after the death of his long time partner, Jim. George dwells on the past and cannot see his future as we follow him through a single day, where a series of events and encounters, ultimately lead him to decide if there is a meaning to life after Jim. George is consoled by his closest friend Charley, a 48 year old beauty who is wrestling with her own questions about the future. A young student of George’s, Kenny, who is coming to terms with his true nature, stalks George as he feels in him a kindred spirit. A romantic tale of love interrupted the isolation that is an inherent part of the human condition and ultimately the importance of the seemingly smaller moments in life.

The Yellow Handkerchief

Brett Hanson is an ex-convict, just released from prison after serving six years for manslaughter and now adrift in a world of new freedoms and responsibilities. Finding initial difficulties in reconciling himself to a troubled past, Brett crosses paths with lonely and troubled teenager Martine and her new ‘ride’ Gordy. The trio head out in the same car and direction–Martine to cut loose and get away from her family, Gordy to get closer to Martine, and Brett who must decide whether he wants to return to his troubled past and an uncertainty with May, the woman that he left behind. Once on the road, the trio find their relationships forging and changing in myriad ways, but it is Brett’s story and his need to reconcile his past to his future that drives the two young people to reassess their own passages as well.
